…driving rain and a battle with a holly bush…

Yesterday the wind eerily whined and whistled around the farm.  In a moment of calm, my boy and I wrapped ourselves up and splashed our way up the rain-soaked lane in search of festive foliage.

I have been overly excited about making my first wreath, and with all the basics bought – metal frames, bags of wet moss, and lots of wire – I sought advice from the great tome HOMEMADE, The Heart and Science of Handcrafts, by Carol Endler Sterbenz…

I just had time to get the basic wreath started – entwining the moss around the frame and securing with lengths of wire – when my babe awoke, and proceeded to hamper my efforts by eating the raw hawthorn berries.

I hope to make a few wreaths over the next couple of weeks and have definitely decided NOT to use holly as my hands have been painfully pierced and ripped.  I’m hoping to go to the Mistletoe Festival in Tenbury Wells next week to attend the mistletoe auction, picking up lots of the beautiful kiss-inspiring branches as a gentler, less painful alternative to the holly.

Interweaving hawthorn berries, snowberries, holly leaves and ethereal, spidery fronds of dried hydrangea I finished the wreath with dried red apple slices and a velvet ribbon…

Hung on the door (I know it’s too early, I just couldn’t resist) it certainly brightened up an otherwise dark, wet and windy day…

To reward our efforts we cracked open a beautiful pomegranate, thwacking the fruit’s hard case with a rolling pin, releasing tiny individual ruby jewels – delish…
